Cradling the baby.

(Mmmm. Golden syrup!)

I must be crazy or something but I swear I treat food like children. I nestle it, watch it, make sure everything is alright. I reminded myself last night of an anxious mother. I was making Nigella's Honey Cake from Feast's Rosh Hashanah chapter, and knowing what a temperamental cake it is, I was extra cautious. While the cake was in the oven, I brought the timer with me into the living room so I could watch our Lost DVD and still keep an eye on my baby. Multitasking -- a skill every mother has. :)

The cake turned out beautifully. Now I know that when I make the full cake, and not reduce quantities, I still have to look into the oven after 25 minutes. That is when I put the foil cover on top so it doesn't brown too much, 15 minutes later, I check for wobblyness. It is still wobbly. And fifteen minutes later, it is done. Still soft towards the middle, but that is desirable. The cake sinks in the middle seconds after leaving the oven, but that is inevitable holding the weight of copious amounts of golden syrup and brown sugar. Oh, this cake is too good! It gets stickier and more delicious as it sits, so I know to make it the night before.

Tonight is Rosh Hashanah eve! Our new year will surely be good and sweet!

Shana Tova u'metooka, sweeties!

Hi Ilana, I don't feel it would be right for me to use the proper words, so I'll just wish you all the best for the coming New Year :)
